The San Diego Chargers released wide receiver Robert Meachem during Saturday’s roster cuts. According to Bull Williamson of ESPN, the New Orleans Saints are on the verge of signing the wide receiver. The signing would get the Chargers off the hook for up to $715,000.

It is a reunion of sorts for the two sides. The Saints drafted him in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft. He never quite lived up to expectations but definitely under-performed while playing for the Chargers last year. He had 14 receptions for 207 yards, a career low. He also had a career low 2 touchdowns.

During his time with the Saints Meachem averaged 36.6 yards a game, in his one season in San Diego he averaged 13.8 yards per game. If he can regain his former Saints form you could pencil him for around 600-650 yards but there are reports that his body is “broken down.”
