Just a few months after Brian Burke denied rumors that he was primed to become the Flames’ CEO, it appears that the reports were exactly correct. While Burke said that he visited Calgary in June simply because his daughter lives in the area, and that may be true, Bruce Dowbiggin states that his sources have told him that this time Burke is in town to make the announcement of his hire official. Chris Johnston of Rogers Sportsnet reports that very well may be the case as well.
Josh Humphries of Fan 960 reports that Burke is in town for a charity event that is being held on Thursday. While there is no telling whether or not that is the sole reason for his trip to Calgary this time, he is scheduled to be on Vancouvers’ Team 1040 radio, which would give him the time and platform to make it official.
It is no secret that the Flames have been hoping to fill an executive position this off-season. Earlier this summer, they confirmed that they were in talks with Brendan Shanahan about the hockey operations job. In addition, current Flames’ GM Jay Feaster is an avid fan of Burke’s. In a 2009 article for The Hockey News, Feaster went on to call Burke “one of the best in the business”.
While reports have neither been confirmed or denied, it appears as though the two sides are close to announcing their agreement.
