Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland doesn’t care about “stat stuff”

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland was not pleased when he was asked about the high run support Detroit pitcher Max Scherzer (now 19-2 on the season) has received in 2013. Some people suggested that Scherzer’s excellent win-loss record is devalued due to the firepower of the Tigers’ batters, a notion Leyland scoffed at.

Said Leyland:

Some people could find a flaw in Bo Derek.

I won’t listen to any of it and have no interest in talking about it. You can figure out whatever you want. My view of pitchers’ stats is this: Did he give us a chance to win? If he did that on any kind of consistent basis for me, then he’s a very good pitcher.

I’m a baseball manager, not a statistician. I’m wasting my time talking about it (ESPN).

To be fair, Scherzer has by far the best run support (5.79) of all the pitchers in the top seven of the American League based on ERA. Still, I wouldn’t discredit math and stats if I was Leyland. I mean, what would Donal Duck say?
