San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis participated in full practice today without protection to his surgically repaired hand, according to multiple San Francisco beat writers.

Willis had surgery back on August 5th to repair a partially fractured hand and was expected to make a full recovery before the 49ers season opener against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. Willis has struggled with hand injuries in the past—he wore a cast on the same hand throughout his rookie season and the 2010 season as well.

Willis is considered, along with teammate NaVorro Bowman, as one of the top inside linebackers in the NFL and anchors San Francisco’s exceptionally potent defensive line. He finished with a combined 120 tackles last season, along with two forced fumbles and two interceptions.
