The Carolina Panthers have voted Cam Newton as captain in his third NFL season. Wednesday, the team voted on who to bestow the coveted ‘C’ on for the 2013 season. Newton was able to show his teammates that he could be their leader and wouldn’t be the player we’ve seen before with the disinterested sideline demeanor.

From the Charlotte Observer:

"Entering his third year as the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback, Cam Newton is finally a team captain.Head coach Ron Rivera announced the six team captains for the 2013 season prior to Thursday’s practice, and the 2011 No. 1 overall draft pick headlines the group. The other five captains are: reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year LB Luke Kuechly, LB Thomas Davis, WR Steve Smith, LT Jordan Gross and C Ryan Kalil."

Cam Newton had said earlier this year that he wanted to be the captain and set his sights on earning that honor this offseason.

“I recognize – and everyone knows around the league – when you’re a team captain that’s not just a patch on the jersey.  You’re holding yourself to a higher standard with being accountable,” Newton said.  “I’m going about it each and every day and trying to make that happen.”
