The Armchair Quarterback Food/Drink/Tailgating Suggestion Of The Week

Make Your Own Z-Man Sandwich

For you poor souls that have never had or never heard of the legendary Z-Man sandwich, let me enlighten you.  The Z-Man is the best BBQ sandwich in the universe.  It is the creation of one of, if not the best, BBQ joints in KC (and therefore the world), Oklahoma Joe’s.  If you are ever in KC for any reason, look them up.  I also recommend going to their original location, which is still inside an operating gas station.  It adds to the experience.  Anyway, here’s how you go about making your own.

On Friday night, or Saturday afternoon go out and get (or smoke your own) some quality beef brisket (cut into thin strips).  Get enough so that you can eat it for the main course of your meal that day but have enough leftover to make a quality sandwich with come kickoff time on Sunday.  Reheat the meat with a slice of smoked provolone cheese on top.  Put the meat and cheese on a roll of your choice.  Hamburger buns are fine, but feel free to splurge on a real bakery roll if you want to make it great. Then cover the meat and cheese with your favorite BBQ sauce.

Now here’s the kicker.  You put two onion rings on top of that.  This is key, do not skip this step.  You can use frozen onion rings from the oven, but if you have a local drive through with great onion rings, I recommend picking up an order before the game.  Put two on the sandwich and then eat the rest as your side.

There you have it, your very own Z-Man.  Now, there is no substitute for the original, but it sure beats a cold ham sandwich or leftover pizza from the night before.

Okay NFL fans, that does it for this week.  Enjoy your football and if there was anything that this Armchair Quarterback said that you loved or hated, let me hear about it in the comments.
