The Detroit Lions announced Friday that six players will wear the captain “C” patches on their uniform this season.
Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Stuphen Tulloch and John Wendling were named captains. Each were captains for the Lions last season.
However, star lineman Ndamukong Suh and free agent kicker David Akers will also be captains for the team. Suh has never been a captain for the team before.
“We have really good leadership in our locker room,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Friday, via MLive.com. “I think all those guys have proved they deserve it.
“But our leadership does not begin and end with our captains. I think we’re very strong throughout our locker room.”
It’s not a surprise that this is Suh’s first season as a captain. His career is hampered with both off-the-field distractions and on-the-field blunders. Earning this honor may be a sentiment of Suh’s maturation in 2013.
