The Brookyln Nets will retire Head Coach Jason Kidd‘s jersey in an October 17th preseason contest against the Miami Heat, according to Devin Kharpertian of thebrooklyngame.com.

Kidd played 19 years in the NBA, seven of them with the then New Jersey Nets when he lead them to the NBA Finals twice.  He retired after the 2012-13 season and agreed to become the Brooklyn Nets Head Coach over the summer.

The ‘secret’ that the Nets would retire Kidd’s number this season slipped out in early August when rookie Mason Plumlee said he couldn’t get the number 5 jersey he wanted because the team was already planning to retire it.

The decision to retire Kidd’s jersey (nor the reasoning behind doing it in the preseason) has not been officially announced by the team.
