The San Francisco 49ers head to Seattle for a Sunday night matchup with their rival Seahawks in one of the most anticipated games of the early NFL season.
And while tensions between the two teams and their respective fanbases have never been higher, it’s just taken on a new twist for Seattle fans. Any Seahawks faithful at CenturyLink Field best be wary of harassing anyone wearing 49ers gear, because undercover cops will be wearing San Francisco apparel.
According to Mike Florio of NBASports.com, undercover officers will wear jerseys and gear of opponents at every Seahawks game this season, starting on Sunday with the San Francisco/Seattle matchup.
“We have great fans,” Seahawks president Peter McLoughlin said. “Our goal is to ensure a safe environment for all in attendance, including visiting team fans.”
As Florio reports, this practice has been done before in San Francisco as well. In 2011 in the NFC Title game, undercover cops attended the 49ers/New York Giants matchup wearing Giants gear.
