When Darrelle Revis sat out the great majority of the 2012 season with a torn ACL, the New York Jets went into the tank in a major way. His current team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are opening to avoid that fate.

Revis took to the radio airwaves on Thursday night, hosing his own, self-named show, and proclaimed that he was less than 100% percent, adding that he “didn’t go through training camp”. To be frank, this probably isn’t a revelation as Revis should just be rounding into form after a year-long rehab process, but for Revis to admit this publicly raises some eyebrows.

Before his exit as a result of the devastating injury, Revis was widely considered the best cornerback in the NFL, and one of the league’s best players overall. He has “only” 19 interceptions in his NFL career, but that is certainly more of a product of opposing offenses avoiding him completely (remember “Revis Island”?) than a lack of play-making skills.

Tampa Bay is currently 0-1 after an embarrassing loss to the Jets in Week 1, and there is even some unrest surrounding quarterback Josh Freeman and his lack of captaincy. However, Revis should be one of the team’s best players, and he was, without question, Tampa Bay’s biggest acquisition in the off-season. If the Bucs are to make a run at the playoffs like many expect, they’ll need a full return to Revis Island, and that could be a few weeks (or months) off as a result of these comments.
