Much has been made about John Lackey’s weight over the last couple of years, particularly in Boston during the Lackey struggles and subsequent injuries. While he may not have returned to Cy Young form this year, he has been a serviceable starter on the season. He still hasn’t pitched up to his exorbitant contract but there are some glimmers of hope that he might get there one day.

In particular, a play that he made tonight was pretty impressive for someone who has been chastised about their weight gain. In this video from MLB he shows some surprising quickness and makes a very difficult play on the speedy Curtis Granderson.

This play has helped the Red Sox jump out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the New York Yankees making a significant playoff push, the Red Sox fans would like nothing more than to see their team be part of the reason that the Yankees don’t get there.

I think that Yankees are too hot right now to not overtake the teams in front of them for one of the wildcard spots in the American League. I would love to see the best rivalry in baseball get another chapter in the postseason this year.
