The University of Nebraska is currently giving the business to UCLA pretty good, so good perhaps that a particular referee felt bad for the Bruins and tried to give them a few extra points.
Down 21-3 at the time, UCLA kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn booted a 46-yard seed down the field which just happened to go wide right. But not according to the referee under the right side of the goal post, who decided the field goal was good, raising his arms in the air much to the shock of well, everybody.
Even his fellow referee under the left side of the goal post wasn’t sure what to do once he saw the hands raise.
When the ball was kicked, you could see the referee under the right side of the goal post put his hand up to his face, almost to shade himself from the sun, so it’s possible he simply was temporarily blinded, which might be the best referee joke set-up in the history of comedy.
The call was reversed moments later after an official review.
