Major League Baseball has decided to postpone tonight’s game between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves after a mass shooting at the U.S. Navy Yard, which is just blocks away from Nationals Park.
Earlier today, both the Nationals and Braves were informed by Major League Baseball to stay away from the stadium as first responders cleared the area, but the teams were allowed into the ballpark later this afternoon.
However, considering the locale of Nationals Park (there are parking lots that backup to the Navy Yard) and the fact that both the Navy Yard and stadium use the same metro stop, it was decided the best option was to postpone the game – a very good decision considering the magnitude of the tragedy.
With the Nationals and Braves scheduled to have a three game set this week, the two teams will play a day-night doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, which will not affect the travel schedule of either team on Wednesday evening.
