It was just posted on AMC.com that there is a ‘companion series’ of The Walking Dead that’s in the works.
According to the post it will feature a new story and set of characters. Now most series spin-offs don’t usually end up as popular as the original. You had The Dukes of Hazard who went from 1979 through 1985 which had two spin-offs in between then but both didn’t last as long. We’ve seen the popular Family Guy have a popular character have his own time slow with The Cleveland Show, which was recently cancelled. Grey’s Anatomy who is entering it’s 10th season later on this month had a spin-off titled “Private Practice” that ran from 2007-2013. That 70′s show almost got the worst of it, having a terrible That 80′s spin off.
“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, the best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.” Robert Kirkman
In a way this is a good idea. For those who keep up with the comic books, usually know what to expect (sort of like myself, I love them!) so this could keep everybody on the edge of their seat instead of pointing things out to those who haven’t read the comics. I’m guilty for doing something like that here and there. So starting fresh like Kirkman said allows his imagination to run wild. The comics are one of the most popular selling comic books in the country, if not the world. So if Kirkman and the rest of his team can continue to put these beautiful comic books together, they can bring something fresh and brand new to the table that all of us should love. There’s always that concern though.
I just hope the same thing doesn’t happen with this show. We’ve all grown to love and hate characters who have come and gone, but I’m not sure if it would ever live up to The Walking Dead. Now if this project actually takes off and does well, then we will have two great television shows airing during the same year.
Right now the series doesn’t have the cast announced, not even sure if anybody has been hired on yet. But they have a target date during 2015 so I’m guessing with The Walking Dead premiering in the Fall, this should premiere after a Walking Dead season finale.
The Walking Dead’s Season 4 will premiere on Sunday October 13th.
So for the fans of this awesome television show, are you excited about this little companion series in the works?
