This might be the premier match up on Wednesday. It is getting top billing on FOX’s networks as it should. It is very star heavy with Barcelona star Lionel Messi and new comer Neymar of Brazil.

Messi in particular isn’t pleased with the way their Champions League season ended last year. They were dismissed by eventual champions Bayern Munich with an aggregate score of 7-0.

“We always wanted to achieve more,” Messi said, via ESPN FC. “Winning the league was very important because of what it signified — winning it back after Real Madrid had won it last year.

“There’s also a bitter taste after what happened in the semi-final against Bayern Munich, where there was a big gap between the two teams — we didn’t go into it in our best shape.

“But that’s the past and we have to look forward. What happened against Bayern? They were just the better team in all respects, physically and in football terms too. They just played a great first leg, and had the advantage over the tie, so they were really superior to us.”

It is the first round of Champions League group stage action for the 2013-14 season. This is a Group G match up between Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona and the Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam. Group G is considered to be the group of death by some in the soccer community. Group G also contains the Italian side AC Milan and Celtic of the Scottish Premiership.
