Florida Atlantic cornerback D’Joun Smith was named the Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week for his Week 3 performance, the Jim Thorpe Award announced Wednesday.
In a 28-10 win against host USF, Smith nabbed an interception and returned it for a 75-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach for the Bulls.
For the season, Smith has recorded nine tackles, one forced fumble and his interception Saturday.
FAU held USF to 275 total yards and only 114 yards passing.
“The defense played well,” FAU coach Carl Pelini said earlier this week. “They are growing and still have a lot of improvement to make.”
The Award named Maryland senior cornerback Dexter McDougle, South Alabama senior cornerback Tyrell Pearson, and Kansas State senior cornerback Kip Daily as honorable mentions for Week 3.
FAU (1-2) hosts Middle Tennessee (2-1) at 12 p.m. Saturday.
