Sir Alex Ferguson pleased to see Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney return to form

There were lots of rumors and reports that Wayne Rooney was trying to leave Old Trafford. His long-term future at the club has been the cause of some speculation. Chelsea pursued the striker during the transfer window but Manchester United didn’t budge and it paid off.

In the opening game of the Champions League group stage Rooney scored two goals to help United beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2.

From Sky Sports:

“Wayne was fantastic,” Ferguson told MUTV. “I’m pleased to see that. He’s got his energy back, his purpose to attack.

“As a director, I’m delighted to see him back to how we remember him.”

Ferguson added: “What is important and key to the team is if Vida (Nemanja Vidic) stays fit. With Van Persie and Rooney, there are forwards that can win games, Valencia’s back to his best and it’s amazing how a shirt number can affect a player.

“De Gea’s maturing, Evra was normal and Carrick is continuing from last season. There were lots of plus points.”

This weekend United face a tough challenge as they take on Manchester City in the Derby at Etihad Stadium. Manchester United has gotten off to a good start by all means, but Moyes has already come under fire after a loss to Liverpool. A win in the Derby could help get the team rolling.
