Outside of Trevor Hoffman and AC/DC’s ‘Hells Bells’, no other closer is as synonymous with an entrance song as New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’.
And just coincidentally, Metallica happened to be in New York on the weekend the Yankees plan to honor quite possibly the greatest closer of all-time.
So what better way to enter the field than to come out to your famed entrance song, but to do so live. That’s exactly what the Yankees’ fireman did today as Metallica appeared live in center field, completely donned in their own Metallica pinstripes while Rivera took a slow paced walk to the mound as 50,000 plus stood for minutes, applauding the lifetime Yankee.
It was a scene to behold and one that Yankee faithful will treasure in their memories for quite a while.
Also of note – the San Francisco Giants, who were in town for the festivities, gave Rivera a guitar autographed by all the members of Metallica in addition to Willie Mays. Metallica themselves gave Rivera a custom pinstriped amp.
