It’s not a good day to be a member of the Baltimore Orioles infield. Not long after third baseman Manny Machado suffered a horrific knee injury, second baseman Alexi Casilla went down after making a play for a ball floating in to the shallow outfield.
Casilla was not paying attention as he chased down the ball, and he made a diving effort that sent him flying right in to teammate Nick Markakis.
As Casilla was in mid-air and Markakis came up to make a play of his own, Casilla’s head landed directly on Markakis’ knee and the brutal impact left the second baseman laying unconscious in the outfield. The Tampa Bay Rays went on to score two runs as Casilla laid on the turf.
Here is a GIF, via Cork Gaines, of the violent collision:
Surpringly, Casilla remained in the game after he woke back up.
This really allows you to appreciate the way the NFL handles concussions. After that violent of a collision and being knocked out cold, there is no way you should be allowed to remain in the game.
