Sacramento Kings nearing contract extension with DeMarcus Cousins

Just hours after announcing that Shaquille O’Neal would be becoming part owner of the Sacramento Kings franchise, the team is making more news, this time in regards to player contracts.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, volatile big man DeMarcus Cousins is expected to sign a near max deal with the Kings sometime before their training camp, which will begin next week.

Per Stein:

Sacramento Kings big man DeMarcus Cousins is on course to see his contract extended before the Oct. 31 extension deadline for 2010 first-round picks, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

Two sources told ESPN.com that Cousins could actually have a deal wrapped up before the Kings open training camp next week in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Kings have little to lose here considering Cousins, who possesses All-Star talent will always be moveable, even if the return isn’t overly fantastic.

Cousins will be next in a relatively long line of 2010 draftees who have already or will be signing their contract extensions. The former Kentucky Wildcats big man is seeking a five year deal worth $80 million dollars.
