In what appeared to be the best college football game of the weekend, Stanford has been named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week for the Cardinal’s 42-28 win against visiting Arizona State on Saturday.
Stanford, awarded the honor by the Football Writers Association of America (F.W.A.A.), led ASU 29-0 at halftime.
“We took it to them in the first half,” Stanford coach David Shaw said after the game Saturday. “They took it back to us in the second half, and that’s what we’re going to have in our conference.
“If you have a team down, you better keep going, because the team’s going to come back. We knew they were going to come back. We just had to make sure we scored more and stopped them at some point in the fourth quarter.”
Despite leading ASU in time of possession, Stanford controlled the ball for 35:25, while ASU had it for 24:34, the Cardinal were outgained in yardage. ASU led with 417 yards, and Stanford gained 391.
The F.W.A.A. also named Fresno State (3-0), Rutgers (3-1) and University of Texas San Antonio (2-2) as additional nominees for the honor.
Stanford (3-0) visits Washington State at 10 p.m. Saturday (ESPN), while ASU (2-1) hosts USC at 10:30 p.m. (ESPN2).
