Today, fans of the Final Fantasy franchise get their first look at the upcoming game Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. You can now watch the 5 minute opening cut scene online.
Lightning Returns picks up five hundred years after the events that transpired at the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2.
As the title would suggest, Lightning, the main protagonist, sole playable character, and narrator has returned from her long self-imposed hibernation. She comes back just in time to witness the final 13 days of the world.
Lightning was awoken by the deity Bhunivelze and chosen as a Savior. A Savior is a semi-divine figure that is tasked with saving the souls of Nova Chrysalia. In thirteen days’ time, it is destined to be destroyed so they may be reborn into a new world.
The opening scene kicks in with Lightning overlooking the city as the people prepare for their time to end. We then find our main character inside of a club; people dancing all around her. Watching from above is Snow Villiers, who is deeply burdened by guilt over the death of his fiancé, and Lightning’s sister, Serah Farron.
Lightning and Snow come face to face just as chaos erupts. A rather epic battle ensues as they both work together to repel the invaders, but also land strikes against each other.
The two of them finally have a break in the action for a moment to speak. Just as they come face to face, and the next move is yet to be had, the lights dim and a small voice is heard in the distance.
Suddenly, Lightning’s sword snaps in half, and we see a girl sitting atop the light fixture in the center of the room.
Uh uh…you aren’t supposed to throw your life away.” She says to Snow as red energy emerges from her finger, causing the structure to explode and fall to the ground just as she disappears through a portal.
The mysterious little troublemaker is Lumina, a new character introduced in the new game, who is a mysterious doppleganger of Lightning’s sister Serah. She will both taunt and guide Lightning in Lightning Returns.
At the end of the cutscene, as the chaos starts to emerge, Snow bids his farewell to Lightning.
“No one is gonna stop me, you hear! Not you, definitely not her. If I have to fight the savior, I will.”
This game is meant to bring a conclusive end to both Lightning and the XIII universe. It will be interesting to see how the next 13 days shape the destiny of a people lying in wait for the end to come.
