Last night the Minnesota Twins overcame a 12-strikeout, 6-inning gem by former MVP Justin Verlander to win in extra innings.

Josmil Pinto provided the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eleventh against Luke Putkonen, keeping the Tigers’ magic number at 2. Brian Dozier, who led off the inning with a single and came around to score, also hit his 18th home run of the season.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, who some speculate could be let go after this season, said his team needed the win after going through a 156-game rough patch (per the Star-Tribune):

“It was good to see them smile,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We’ve been going through some tough times, and we needed this.”

The Tigers, stuck in neutral with five games left to play, have two more games against the Twins and then close out the season in Miami.
