If you’re not familiar with California Golden Bears quarterback Jared Goff, a true freshman responsible for managing Sunny Dyke’s Air Raid offense, it’s time you learn his name. Though Cal’s record is not impressive, Goff is putting up some spectacular numbers, leading the nation in passing yards per game (433.7) and sitting in second nationally in passing attempts per game (55.7).
One person Goff has really impressed is Oregon Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich, whose team will be taking on the Golden Bears this upcoming Saturday. Helfrich spoke about the young Cal quarterback during his weekly press conference and was clearly impressed with the way Goff has played:
He’s a really good player and he’s in a great system where they complete a lot of short, quick passes, whether it’s the tight end or the screen game. Just getting the ball out of his hands, making it simple, and then they’ve got a couple guys on the end, (WR Bryce) Treggs can go up and get it, and a couple guys can go up and get it and create big plays outside. It’s a nice marriage of a really skilled guy who’s well coached (Oregon Live).
As well as Goff has played in 2013, starting on the road in Autzen will be an eye-opening experience. Though the Oregon secondary is supremely talented — easily the best in the Pac-12 and one of the best in the country — don’t be surprised to see Goff take some big shots downfield against the Ducks. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. PT and can be seen on the Pac-12 Network.
