Steve Spurrier wants Jadeveon Clowney to get in better shape

It’s been a disappointing season for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Despite somewhat impressive wins over the North Carolina Tar Heels and Vanderbilt Commodores, a key SEC loss to the Georgia Bulldogs was sandwiched in between those two victories.

The Bulldogs likely represent the biggest obstacle for the Gamecocks and their chances to get to the SEC Championship game in December and they are now essentially two games behind the Bulldogs. Of course, the Bulldogs have a tougher schedule the rest of the way, starting Saturday when they host the unbeaten LSU Tigers. Both teams still have a date with the Florida Gators. As usual, the Bulldogs and Gators will square off in Jacksonville, Florida while the Gamecocks will host the Gators this season.

The Gamecocks will have another stiff challenge this week when they take on the Central Florida Golden Knights, who earned a huge win over Penn State the last time they took the field.

Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier knows his best player, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney needs to make more of an impact. Of course, living up to the offseason hype would have been impossible for Clowney, but he clearly can (and will) play better.

“I told Jadeveon, you need to get in better shape,” Spurrier joked. “It’s going to be a hot day.”

Clowney has 10 tackles and two sacks this season.

The Gamecocks and Knights will kickoff at noon EST.
