Many teams in college football have taken the “Oregon” approach, often switching up their uniforms and trying new and more daring uniforms.

The Hokies’ new helmets will made of “Hokie stone.” The helmets look like rocks and Hokie stone is the type of rock that mined near the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia and many of the schools buildings have the Hokie stone design.

“It’s not flashy, but it means a tremendous amount to this university,” head coach Frank Beamer said in a statement via “… The reason I like it, is because it represents what this program and this university are built on. Each piece, in its place, serving its purpose, doing its job, and when it’s all working together, it’s rock solid and it’s something special.”

“… Some may see it as stone on our helmets. We know it’s so much more.”
