The final leg of the 2013 America’s Cup took place on Wednesday afternoon on the San Francisco Bay as Oracle Team USA of the Golden Gate Yacht Club and Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Emirates Team New Zealand competed for the crown.
Team Oracle USA was looking to defend their title from a year ago and complete an epic comeback in this race after initially trailing Emirates Team New Zealand 8-1, but they came roaring back to tie things up at eight a peace heading in to the final go.
Like the races leading up to the finals of the America’s Cup, the final race was absolutely incredible.
The two teams stayed even to start things off and it was a nail biter in the winner-take-all race of the longest edition of the America’s Cup in history (lasting 19 days). Near the end, one team started to pull away.
When it was all said and done, Oracle Team USA was able to complete their wild comeback to notch their ninth win and take home the 2013 America’s Cup. It was an incredible performance capped off by a storybook ending for the Americans.
It was a great finish to the America’s Cup and fans of racing and sailing couldn’t be more satisfied with the exciting finish. Congratulations go out to the back-to-back champions.
