Last week, a report surfaced that BYU Cougars linebacker Spencer Hadley would be suspended indefinitely by the program for an “unspecified violation of team rules.”
At the time, neither Hadley nor head coach Bronco Mendenhall (or anyone in the BYU athletic department) would comment on the situation.
According to the Associated Press, Hadley has been suspended for “partying and drinking alcohol in Las Vegas.” Hadley is 23-years old, so by criminal law, he did nothing wrong.
BYU has a strict honor code, which prevents their students from participating in activities like drinking, doing drugs or having premarital sex. In fact, you might remember back in 2011, former BYU basketball player Brandon Davies was suspended for having premarital sex and the school cited an honor code violation as the reason. In both cases, neither athlete committed any actual crime.
Through two games, Hadley had 12 tackles. As a junior last season, Hadley had 55 tackles, nine tackles for loss and three sacks.
Hadley missed Saturday’s 20-13 loss to the rival Utah Utes and isn’t eligible to return until an October 25 showdown with the Boise State Broncos, at the earliest.
