Mark Helfrich discusses Oregon's lack of turnovers

The Oregon Ducks do a lot of things well on offense — scoring points, racking up yards, making defenders want to vomit from fatigue, etc. — but perhaps their most impressive stat is their lack of turnovers. Oregon is the only FBS team without a turnover this year, and their turnover margin of 2.3 is the second best in country.

A lot of Oregon’s success at avoiding turnovers has to do with calm demeanor of Marcus Mariota — it’s rare to see the young quarterback throw an errant pass — but Helfrich said on Wednesday that it’s a facet of the game they emphasize every single day:

It’s something we harp on and harp on; there is no off-day for coaching ball security. It’s a fundamental, like tying your shoes, brushing your teeth — you have to do it every single day the right way or it’s going to pop up (Oregon Live).

If the Ducks continue to take care of the ball, it is hard to imagine a defense being able to stop them in 2013. Their next game is against the Cal Golden Bears this upcoming Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT.
