Following back-to-back losses to kick off his first stint in the UFC, lightweight Ryan Couture has been released by the promotion. The news that the son of UFC Hall of Famer and former champion Randy Couture was released was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Considering the poor relationship between Couture’s father and UFC president Dana White, it really comes as no surprise.
Couture’s manager Sam Spira confirmed to MMA Junkie that the 31-year-old received his walking papers.
After starting off his professional career with a 2-0 record, Couture sputtered against Matt Ricehouse in 2011. However, he turned it around and reeled off six straight wins — with two controversial decisions — before making the jump to the UFC.
There, it appeared that the increased talent was too much to handle at this stage in his career.
Couture’s plan is now to get some fights outside of the promotion and look to build his record, before making another return to the octagon. Whether or not he will get that chance remains to be seen.
