UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones took the biggest beating of his career in an epic match at UFC 165 against Alexander Gustafsson. Many were calling for an immediate rematch for the Swede following their Fight of the Year candidate, but UFC president Dana White has decided to go in a different direction.
According to Brett Kamoto of ESPN, Jones’ next title defense will come against No. 1 contender Glover Teixeira.
The fight will likely take place on the Super Bowl weekend card in New Jersey.
“That’s what the champ wants,” White told ESPN. “We’ll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey.”
When you’re the champ, you get to choose your fights.
As for what’s next for Gustafsson, White says that he will fight around the same time as Jones vs. Teixeira against a yet to be named opponent in his home country of Sweden. One interesting opponent could be Gegard Mousasi, who was originally supposed to fight Gustafsson at UFC on FUEL TV 9 earlier this year.
While many would have liked to see Jones vs. Gustafsson II, we should still be in for a great treat as Jones puts his title on the line against a man currently riding a 20-fight winning streak.
