The Miami Marlins got a win tonight against the American League Central leading Detroit Tigers. The game was largely meaningless for Miami as they have been eliminated from the postseason for quite some time. While the game may be meaningless for the team as a whole, it is not for some of the players who are playing for a contract for next season.
One of those players is Placido Polanco. The 15 year veteran turns 38 in a few weeks but has not indicated that he is hanging up the cleats just yet. After this great catch he might not be ready to either.
Polanco goes head first into the stands to make a great catch down the third base line. It wasn’t exactly Derek Jeter in the playoffs but it was still a great grab.
Polanco could find an offer this offseason from a team looking for a very short-term solution at third base. At this stage of his career Polanco’s biggest asset is his baseball smarts and clubhouse presence. His bat has certainly suffered in recent years but he has played for so long that he could be valuable on a team with younger players, much like he did with the Marlins this year. If he does decide to retire then he can look back on this play as one of the best ones in his last season.
