Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze made an announcement on Friday that should have fans in Oxford excited: Denzel Nkemdiche, the team’s star linebacker, will play when the Rebels take on the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. Nkemdiche had surgery earlier in the season to repair a torn meniscus.
Nkemdiche’s return should provide a huge boost for the undefeated Rebels. As a freshman in 2012, Nkemdiche led Ole Miss with 82 tackles (37 solo and 45 assisted), earning All-SEC second team honors and as well as being named to the national Freshman All-America first team. He also intercepted three passes, forced four fumbles, and recorded three sacks. He played especially well against Alabama, racking up 11 tackles and forcing two fumbles in a 33-14 loss to the Crimson Tide.
The contest between the Rebels and the Crimson Tide is one of the most anticipated games of the weekend. Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace is putting together a strong season, and the defense is only surrendering 114.33 yards per game on the ground. The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN.
