Purdue ends Rob Henry era at quarterback, replaces him with freshman

WEST LAFAYETTE — With the Purdue offense looking lost on the field against visiting Northern Illinois in the first half Saturday, Boilermakers coach Darrell Hazell elected to play freshman quarterback Danny Etling over starter Rob Henry on the final drive of the half.

NIU leads Purdue 27-10 at halftime.

Henry was 5 of 16 for 130 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and a fumble. The offense looked lackluster at best, despite putting up 280 yards.

Etling checked in with 0:32 remaining in the half and he completed both of his pass attempts — the first pass attempts of his career — to set up Purdue with a Paul Griggs 47-yard field goal. Hazell most likely put Etling in to provide a spark to an offense that punted twice and turned the ball over three times against a team from the Mid-American Conference.

NIU receives the ball to start the second half.
