Miami Heat expected to extend contract of head coach Erik Spoelstra

Jun 16, 2013; San Antonio, TX, USA; Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra addresses the media prior to game five in the 2013 NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs at the AT

It wasn’t that long ago that Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra was on the chopping block.

Of course, that was prior to the addition of both LeBron James and Chris Bosh, who alongside Dwyane Wade have turned the Heat into one of the premier franchises in the NBA.

Some have questioned Spoelstra’s ability on the clipboard but Spoelstra has left no doubt as to his ability to control ego’s, no small feat considering the names on his roster.

Wanting to reward him (and more likely avoid a bidding war on the open market), the Miami Heat are set to announce a contract extension with Spoelstra in the coming days.

Per Yahoo:

Two-time NBA championship coach Erik Spoelstra is finalizing a multiyear contract extension with the Miami Heat, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The deal is expected to be made public before the start of the Heat’s training camp in the Bahamas this week, sources said.

There’s been no word as to the amount of years or money Spoelstra is to receive.
