Colorado State linebacker Shaquil Barrett earns Bronko Nagurski honor


According to a press release Monday, the Football Writers Association of America has selected Shaquil Barrett, senior linebacker for the Colorado State football team, as the Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Rams’ 59-42 win against visiting UTEP last Saturday.

Barrett recorded 13 tackles, six solo tackles, three sacks, two forced fumble, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry.

The Baltimore native has recorded 39 tackles and 6.5 sacks through five games this season.

Colorado State (2-3, 0-0 Mountain West) hosts San Jose State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins.

The Bronko Nagurksi Award is presented to the nation’s most outstanding defensive player by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Bronko Nagurski was an All-American defensive tackle and fullback in 1929. He is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

The finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 21.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o won the award in 2012.
