This morning Warner Brothers Pictures released the newest trailer for the second chapter in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug. It gives us the most comprehensive preview yet of the film’s central set pieces, and it looks like part two will be covering quite a bit of ground.
In just two and a half minutes, the trailer gives us glimpses of the conflict between Thorin’s dwarves and the wood elves (and the iconic escape down the river in barrels); the spiders that ambush the dwarves in the forest; Beorn the shape-shifter in his bear form; Bard the Bowman and Laketown; and a heavy focus on Legolas, who never appeared in the book but seems to have a significant role in this movie.
But the big highlight of this trailer comes at the end. We have yet to actually see “O Smaug the stupendous” (to quote Bilbo) in his full reptilian glory, but we do hear him speak for the first time. Benedict Cumberbatch provides the voice for the titular dragon, and it is as slow, deep, and menacing as it should be. “Come now, don’t be shy…Step into the light,” he tells Bilbo, before unleashing his scalding breath directly at the camera. I personally can’t wait for Smaug to do just that.
