Portland Trail Blazers rookie C.J. McCollum is no stranger to putting in extra work, but the young guard out of Lehigh realized after his first official NBA practice on Tuesday that he has to learn how to conserve his energy. Looking to work on his shooting once practice was done, McCollum noticed that all of his teammates were opting for rest instead of extra drills. The rookie took that as a sign that he’ll have to adjust his habits if he wants to avoid injury.
You see nobody is shooting right now, going over there and shooting after practice. That’s a sign that I shouldn’t go shoot either. I asked coach, ‘Should I do my normal workout after practice?’ And he’s like, ‘No. That’s a couple weeks from now. You go home, you rest, ice bath.’ I’m going to enjoy this massage I’m about to get right now (Oregon Live).
A star player at Lehigh, McCollum knows that, despite being a first-round selection, he’ll have to earn his minutes for the Blazers. Portland fans are hoping both he and Mo Williams can help relieve some of the pressure on Damian Lillard, the NBA’s leader in minutes in 2012.
