Virginia Tech's Cody Journell says he received threats after missed kick

Following Virginia Tech’s 17-10 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets last Thursday, place kicker Cody Journell received two mysterious, threatening, anonymous calls. You know, because harassing a kicker who missed a field goal in a win is a very sane way to spend one’s time. The Blacksburg Police Department was notified about the situation, and Journell has since changed his cell phone number.

Fun times.

Journell sp0ke about the incident for the first time on Tuesday:

I’m not really going to go into what the person actually said, other than it did kind of freak me out a little. It was more the person finding my number that kind of freaked me out more than anything (The Washington Post).

Head coach Frank Beamer also briefly addressed the situation, saying that the caller certainly “wasn’t a good Hokie fan.”

Journell, a fifth-year senior, is three-for-six on field goals in 2013. His struggles should be temporary, though, considering he made over eighty percent of his kicks in 2011 and 2012.
