The rivalry between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen reached new heights earlier in the week, when the Brazilian pulled off a publicity stunt at the Olympia Expo in Las Vegas. Silva had a camera follow him for a face to face meeting with Sonnen, where the two UFC stars got in to a heated exchange before Wanderlei took to YouTube to deliver a WWE-esque call out.
After letting the dust settle for a few days, Sonnen finally took the time to respond on Wednesday night to open UFC Tonight on FOX Sports 1.
Sonnen delivered some strong words to Silva for his stunt and made it clear that he’s not someone you want to mess with.
“I’m all for Wanderlei having a little fun,” Sonnen said. “Good for him. Let him have his fun. But Wanderlei, thee things: First off, if you’re going to do a publicity stunt, do not bring your own camera. It looks staged, which it was. It insults your audience. Assume that they’re going to connect the dots. Show up where a camera is, and then go into your routine.
“Secondly, in this country and within this industry, if you refuse to fight a guy like you did me, you forfeit your right to talk about that person in this type of fashion. Accosting someone in public can be regrettable. Accosting a gangster can be hazardous.
“Third and finally, Wanderlei, if you would like to come on this very set and conduct a conventional and traditional style interview, we here at ‘UFC Tonight’ will pay your way.”
It would certainly be interesting to see Sonnen and Silva meet face to face in the studio, but something tells me the UFC will do what they can to keep the two fighters away from each other until a possible meeting in the octagon.
First, Sonnen will have to get passed former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans in the co-main event at UFC 167, but then he can turn his attention towards Wanderlei and give us one of the most epic lead ups to a fight in the sports history.
