Well it looks like the Chicago Cubs are the team who are willing to take a chance on the injury prone first baseman Mat Gamel. Don’t know what it is with Chicago teams and wanting to pick up players who have had some serious injuries in their careers but, it’s something these teams do.
Anyways, Gamel was waived by the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday after barely playing the last couple of seasons after re-tearing his ACL. He hasn’t provided much offense considering he’s only played 31 games in two seasons.
Right now the Cubs have one of their franchise prospects in Anthony Rizzo holding down first base. Rizzo played in 160 games last season with 23 home runs and 80 RBI’s, so maybe this could be either a cheap substitute or a minor league project? Not sure what the point of this is, the man won’t take Rizzo’s starting position at first.
But whatever Epstein has up his sleeve, I’m sure everything will work out for the guys in pin-strips on the North Side of Chicago. This move could have saved them a little bit of money since there has been talks of the team looking to spend some big time cash on a catcher.
