Rafael Nadal gets closer to reclaiming No. 1 spot

Rafael Nadal managed to get closer to reaching the number one spot in the world again with a win in the quarterfinals of the China Open. He was able to beat Fabio Fognini of Italy in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. In order to actually have a chance of claiming the top spot, he will have to reach the finals whee it seems that he could be meeting Novak Djokovic, the current number 1 seed.

Djokovic beat American Sam Querry in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, in just under an hour of play, which is incredible. But then again, that is to be expected of someone like Djokovic.

Nadal is now going to face (4) Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, who beat John Isner in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. The Spaniard attributes his win against Fognini to being able to come back when down a set, and said this in an article on ESPN.

I was able to fight, to change a little bit the dynamic of the match. The players who are in the top position of the rankings, it’s because they are able to win when things are not going well. One of the most important things in tennis (is to) win when you don’t play well.

Nadal is just two wins away from possibly dethroning Djokovic as the number 1 seed in tennis, but we will have to see if he can get by Berdych first.
