Going out to qualify early never really helps anyone and on Friday Jeff Gordon came out second with things looking good on the chart as he clocked in at 185.141 mph, but Martin Truex Jr, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jimmie Johnson came after Gordon shortly to pass him as the 24 car ended up qualifying 14th on Sunday at Kansas.
During practice sessions in general, the 24 car has been steady but not great. Gordon was seventh fastest in first practice on Friday, 11th fastest in second practice and so far during the practice sessions, Gordon and his team have been trying to figure out the tires on the track as it seems to have good grip at the start of the run, but falls off a little towards the end.
Through the first 17 laps in final practice, Gordon ran the ninth fastest time on the track so it seems like Gordon may have a good car which is good on the short run, but struggle a little on the long run. To solve that Gordon ended up running over 40 laps in the final practice as he ended up 12th fastest.
Gordon didn’t drive much in dirty air so with him starting 14th on Sunday it remains to be seen how the car will react.
