There are times and places for a fake punt.
Tied in a 10-10 game against a relatively solid team backed up on your own goal line usually isn’t one.
But apparently, Kansas head coach Charlie Weis is a gambling man because despite the overwhelming odds suggesting he shouldn’t do such, Weis did just that, running a fake punt nearly out of his own end zone.
As expected, the results weren’t very positive. Trevor Pardula received the snap and promptly ran to the left side of the field gaining, well, nothing actually, in the process. He was able to return to the ball to the original line of scrimmage, but nothing more.
That gave Texas Tech beautiful field position, which they took advantage of, scoring two downs later.
A bit of an oddity in the replay (or GIF below) is you can see that Tech only rushed three players, so it’s possible that Pardula could have simply decided to call his own fake attempt, though, I suspect he’s going to have an awful week at practice if he did.
