Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Rafael Nadal will reclaim the No. 1 spot in the world tennis rankings by virtue of making the finals of the China Open on Saturday. Nadal advanced to the final when Tomas Berdych retired from the match with a back injury. Nadal will take on current No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday but regardless of that result, Nadal will take the top spot from the Serbian.
Nadal is keeping things in perspective:
”The personal satisfaction is not because I am No. 1 today, it’s because (of) all the work (I put in) to be where I am today,” Nadal said. ”I don’t feel (like) a better player now than five hours ago, and I won’t go to bed tonight feeling that I am the best player in the world-that’s something I’ve never thought.”
Many thought that Rafa may never achieve this honor again following his knee injury. With the rise of talent in the men’s side of the draw, it seemed unlikely that he would be able to pass Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Nadal may be playing some of his best tennis in recent years and as long as that continues we can be sure that a golden age of tennis will continue.
