Green Bay Packers star linebacker Clay Matthews left the team’s Week 5 victory over the Detroit Lions in the fourth quarter with a hand injury and reports are already surfacing about the nature of his injury.

A league source told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk the Matthews has suffered a fracture in his injured thumb.

Matthews is a key part of the Packers defensive success, so the Packers will have to hope the injury will not force him to miss action if it is bad as is initially being reported. If he is forced to miss time, the next two games against the AFC North leading Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals would be the contests in jeopardy.

The good news is that the Packers went on to beat the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field, 22-9, for yet another year.

The timetable for Matthews is not currently known, but we can expect an official update within the next 24 hours as the team continues to evaluate the injury and more information becomes available.
