Alfonso Cuarón’s 3-D interstellar epic, Gravity tore it up this weekend at the Box Office.
The Warner Bros. film starring Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone and George Clooney as veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski earned an estimated $55 million this weekend.
Roughly 20% of that total was brought in by the IMAX showings of the film, accounting for $11.2 million domestically.
Both of those numbers are records for the month of October.
According to Variety, the overall three day domestic gross for Gravity included about 80% of its revenue from 3-D showings. October’s previous record holder was 2011’s Paranormal Activity 3 which debuted at $52.6 million.
In Gravity Sandra Bullock’s character Dr. Ryan Stone is faced with one of the most imaginable tasks known to man, the struggle to stay alive in a place where life is impossible.
While on a spacewalk, debris from a satellite crashes into the Explorer, rendering it essentially useless. Trapped all alone out in space, she has to deal with the recent loss of her daughter, and struggle to stay alive long enough to find a way back to Earth all at the same time.
Coming in second this week at the Box Office was last week’s Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 with $21.5 million
Coming in third was Fox’s Runner Runner starring Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, and Gemma Arterton.
Runner Runner came in at a low $7.6 million dollars.
