Maria Sharapova withdraws from WTA Championship

The upcoming TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul will occur without the presence of the third-ranked Maria Sharapova, who withdrew from the competition due to a nagging shoulder injury. The 26-year-old Russian star — still unfortunately unaffiliated with tank biathlons — has not played in over a month.

Sharapova announced her decision on the WTA’s website on Monday:

I am very disappointed that I will not be able to play in the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships this year. The fans in Istanbul have welcomed us each year with such intense passion and warmth, I will sincerely miss the energy and excitement they brought to the year-end tournament. I want to thank Istanbul for being a tremendous host and hope to play in Turkey sometime in the future.
Sharapova’s withdrawal means that the final spot for the eight-player tournament is now up for grabs. Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Li Na, Sara Errani, Petra Kvitova, and Jelena Jankovic have already qualified. The tournament will run from October 22nd through the 27th.
