According to Bob Nightengale of the USA Today, the Chicago Cubs have re-sign outfielder Ryan Sweeney to a two-year deal worth $3.5 million.

Sweeney, who signed with the Cubs back in April, batted .266, had an on base percentage of .324 and slugged .448, the highest slugging percentage of his career. He hit six home runs, had 19 RBI and walked 17 times in 70 games for the Cubs in 2013.

According to Nightengale, Sweeney will make $1.5 million in 2014 and has a $500,000 buyout for the 2015 season.

Sweeney signed with the Boston Red Sox in 2012 and had an extremely disappointing season. He batted .260, had an on base percentage of .303 and slugged just .373. He hit zero home runs, had 16 RBI and 12 walks in 63 games.

The Cubs signed Sweeney to a minor league deal and he was called up to the big leagues on May 6.

Sweeney, a seven-year veteran, is still just 28 years old, so this is a low risk re-signing for the Cubs that has some potential upside.

Sweeney has also played for the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics. His best season came with the A’s in 2009. Sweeney batted .293, had an on base percentage of .348 and slugged .407. He hit six home runs and drove in 53 runs.
