East Carolina University head football coach Ruffin McNeill is known for his disciplinary actions. Everyone around ECU knows that McNeill is a no nonsense type of football coach, and on Tuesday, he proved that reputation.
McNeill announced that a pair of his receivers have been suspended indefinitely for violating unspecified team policies. Danny Webster, a junior, and Quataye Smyre, a redshirt freshman, are the two receivers involved.
In a statement released by McNeil, the head ball coach seemed genuinely disappointed more than anything else.
“While this situation is contrary to the progress we’ve made and certainly not indicative of the many right choices we make as a collective group, I’m disappointed any time we have to address issues like this. We always talk about being accountable as a program and any behavior that contradicts that is unacceptable. Our priority is to put people in a position to succeed.”
Webster will be a significant loss to Ruffin McNeill’s team. After starting four of the first five games, he racked up 18 receptions, good for third on the team, and 144 yards. Webster had also returned two punts for 24 yards, as well as a kickoff for 22.
Smyre has only played in the last two contests, and has managed just three catches for 19 yards.
